Overview

Discover the Historic Centre of Bruges with a visit to the city’s main square. Arriving in the old town, you’ll see medieval buildings alongside churches, canals and chocolate shops. At the heart of it all is the Markt, a huge square that draws in thousands of tourists to explore this charming part of Bruges.

Arriving in the square, you’ll see a buzz of activity, from horse-drawn carriages to open-air restaurants and cyclists on their way to work. Surrounded by beautiful medieval buildings and modern reconstructions, the Markt is the central hub of Bruges, and a sight you shouldn’t miss during your visit to the city. In the middle of the square you’ll see a large monument showing the leaders of Bruges Matins revolt in 1302. But the biggest sight is the Belfry, a huge tower that dominates the square. Make sure you climb the 366 steps to the top of the tower, and you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the whole city.

While at the Markt, spend some time looking at the medieval buildings. Look out for Bouchaute, the oldest house on the square, which has a golden globe on the roof installed in the 19th century to tell the time.

There’s a market on the square every Wednesday morning, and if you’re visiting the city during December don’t miss the Christmas Market which has its very own ice rink. After spending some time in the Historic Centre, walk over to the Basilica of the Holy Blood, explore the Historium, or go and see the Chocolate Museum. From the Markt, it’s easy to hop on a canal cruise to see the rest of Bruges.
